One aspect of competitive skateboarding which has proved resistant to the Japanese Wave felt everywhere else has been Men’s Park. Interestingly, current 15th place Yuro Nagahara is the only Japanese skateboarder in the current top 45 in his discipline. An equally proficient Vert skateboarder as in Park terrain, Yuro was one of several skaters who took the opportunity to fly out to Argentina in advance of May 2023’s WST San Juan in order to familiarise himself with the park. The result was a leaderboard leap of 13 places better than his World Championship outing in Sharjah the previous January- and a 10th place which left him just shy of making the finals cut, after which anything can happen. Alongside Liz Akama, Yuro is the other Japanese stealth weapon rising quietly along the outside edge of the pack.
