Wyldata: Action Sports Performance Index (ASPI)

Wyldata: Action Sports Performance Index (ASPI)

Published Mar 08, 2025

In action sports, measuring an athlete’s performance has always been a challenge. Unlike traditional sports where statistics like goals, points, or times define success, action sports involve creativity, style, and a wide range of disciplines. At Wyldata, we have developed the Action Sports Performance Index (ASPI) - a new metric that allows us to compare action sports athletes across different sports in a fair and meaningful way.

What is the ASPI Score?

The ASPI Score is a comprehensive rating system that evaluates an athlete’s performance on a scale from 0 to 100. It takes into account three key components: Consistency, Rank, and recent performance trend to provide an accurate and balanced assessment of an athlete’s competitive standing.

Breaking Down the ASPI Score

The ASPI Score is calculated using a weighted formula that considers different aspects of an athlete’s performance:

1. Consistency Score (25% of total)

This factor measures how reliably an athlete performs at a high level over time.

  • It looks at finishing positions over the past year to determine consistency.
  • Athletes who consistently place well in competitions receive higher scores.
  • It filters out unusual performances (both exceptionally good and bad) to ensure accuracy.
  • Those who regularly finish near the top of competitions will score higher in this category.

2. Rank Score (60% of total)

This is the most important factor, representing an athlete’s standing in their best discipline.

  • It identifies the highest-ranked discipline for each athlete.
  • The ranking is converted into a score, with higher rankings earning higher scores.
  • This component highlights the importance of achieving top positions in competitions, which translate into a high position on the global discipline ranking.

Since many action sports lack an official ranking system, Wyldata has created proprietary rankings to fill this gap. We are working on making these rankings publicly accessible, and you can already find many of them on https://whoranked.com

3. Trend Score (15% of total)

The trend score assesses whether an athlete is improving or declining based on recent performances.

  • It analyzes results from the last two months.
  • A score of 50 means no clear trend (neutral performance).
  • A score above 50 indicates improvement, while a score below 50 suggests decline.
  • The algorithm rewards athletes who are consistently performing at elite levels.

Additional Factors

Beyond the three main components, there are additional adjustments to ensure fairness:

  • Variety Bonus: Athletes who rank in the top 10 in multiple disciplines receive a 5% bonus to their overall score.
  • New Athletes: If an athlete doesn’t have enough data, they receive a default score of 10 until more results are available.
  • Maximum Score: The highest possible ASPI score is capped at 100.

Why the ASPI Matters

The ASPI Score offers several key benefits for athletes, fans, and event organizers:

  • A Universal Benchmark: It allows for cross-sport comparisons, making it easier to identify the top athletes in action sports.
  • Objective and Data-Driven: By using a structured formula, it eliminates bias and provides a fair representation of an athlete’s performance.
  • Tracks Performance Over Time: The Trend Score gives valuable insights into an athlete’s progression or decline.
  • Rewards Consistency and Versatility: Athletes who consistently perform well or excel in multiple disciplines are recognized appropriately.

The Future of Athlete Rankings

With the introduction of the ASPI, we aim to bring a new level of clarity and fairness to the world of action sports. Whether you’re an athlete looking to measure your performance, a fan comparing your favorite competitors, or an event organizer seeking a reliable ranking system, the ASPI provides a standardized and transparent solution.

At Wyldata, we believe that action sports deserve a ranking system that captures the skill, dedication, and evolution of athletes. The ASPI is our way of making that vision a reality.
